Workshop on "Systems Biology in Medicine" - Barcelona, Spain - 21-23 May 2008

Convenor: Pablo Villoslada (ES)

Systems biology (SB) is a growing area that aims to understand biological systems at an holistic level. SB integrates theoretical and experimental research. SB has applications in various areas related to medicine. However little is known in the medical profession about the theories and techniques behind SB. This workshop is oriented to establish a permanent link between medical doctors and SB scientists fruitful for both fields.

Conference on "Integrated Mechanisms of Cellular Identity and Homeostasis" - Cambridge, United Kingdom - 26-27 June 2008

Convenors: Anne E. Corcoran (UK), Raghu Padinjat (UK) and Martin Turner (UK)

In the ground-breaking post genomic era of functional genomics, two key areas have taken centre stage: epigenetics and systems biology. The study of DNA methylation, chromatin modifications and other epigenetic mechanisms conferring heritable transcriptional states, hold the key to understanding gene regulation in biology and its application to medicine. In parallel, major advances in areas including transcriptomics and proteomics have necessitated the development of systems biology to integrate the enormous amount of information being generated about the protein products of these genes, with the aim of quantitatively defining the components and interactions of complex cellular signalling pathways. This conference brings together key international leaders in epigenetics and signalling to explore two convergent themes that embrace these topics: Epigenetic mechanisms in development and Cellular responses to the environment. These themes have evolved from our vision of the need for integrative approaches both inside and outside the nucleus, and one of the aims of this meeting is to foster cross-disciplinary approaches to incorporate and exploit the large-scale experimental and computational information being generated in the post-genomic era.

Conference on "Angiogenesis in cancer and cardiovascular diseases" - Helsinki, Finland - 28-29 August 2008

Convenor: Kari Alitalo (FI)

This meeting focuses on the molecular mechanisms of angiogenesis in cancer and in cardiovascular disease. The field is rapidly moving forward, particularly due to the recent emergence of novel
approaches such as epigenetics, micro-RNAs, and the study of neural guidance molecules in the elucidation of the mechanisms regulating angiogenesis. The meeting aims at providing the attendees a comprehensive state-of-the-art overview of the current advances in the field.

Workshop on "Dynamics of Cell Signal Systems" - Oslo, Norway - 25-28 September 2008

Convenors: Johannes Bos (NL), Peter Downes (UK), Miles Houslay (UK), Jacques Pouyssegur (FR), John Scott (NO) and Kjetil Tasken (NO)

Information flow through dynamically regulated multiprotein complexes is finely tuned by the opposing activities of signal transduction and termination enzymes and spatiotemporally regulated by anchoring and docking molecules. New techniques permit detection of protein-protein interactions and physiological events in real time inside cells. Combined with computational analysis and systems biology such data can be used to understand how dynamic protein networks propagate, process and disseminate second messenger signals at the molecular and cellular level.
