Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II honours ESF’s President Ian Halliday with CBE

Professor Ian Halliday, President of the European Science Foundation, has been appointed a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire, a grade in the Order of the British Empire) in the Queen's New Year's Honours List, for 2009. The award is to recognise his contribution to science.

Professor Halliday, who is currently the Chief Executive of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance, is formerly the Chief Executive of the UK’s Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council.  He started his Presidency for ESF on 1 January 2006. He was unanimously approved to a second three-year term as President at the ESF Assembly, which took place on November 28 at the Old Parliament in Stockholm. His new term will run from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2011.  

A fellow of the Institute of Physics in the UK and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Professor Halliday has a proven track record both as a scientist and as a leading advocate for the advancement of science at European and international levels.

His distinguished career includes leadership roles in many international scientific committees and boards. His is also the Chair of the Funding Agencies for the Linear Collider (also known as the Halliday Committee), which created a body where  funding  agencies from Europe, North America and Asia could meet and discuss this exciting project.
