Antarctic Ice Sheet; Southern Ocean; Antarctic ice shelves; Ocean circulation
Recent technological advances have led to the development of instruments and a new generation of observations in the Antarctic Shelf Seas. Observations below the floating glaciers are now possible, as well as continuous monitoring of the ocean and surveying by various profiling devices that are operating autonomously. Several of the world leading research groups in this area are stationed in Europe. Break-through research is conducted on individual regional systems, but the time has come to consider larger systems such as the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. In order to make that advance the individual research groups must work together and share and discuss knowledge, data and logistic resources.
