European Network for the Study of Adrenal Tumors (ESF-ENS@T)

NEWS

The ESF-ENS@T programme officially ended on 30 November 2014 and no more activities or grants are anymore funded.

The North-Western State, Medical University of Saint Petersburg (Russia), supported the ESF-ENSAT programme from 2012 onwards.  The University of Padova (Italy) contributes to the ESF-ENSAT from April 2010 onwards.

Summary

Adrenal tumors generate both the threats associated with hormone hypersecretion, particularly hypertension in Conn’s adenoma, pheochromocytoma, and cortisol secreting tumors (adrenal Cushing’s), and those associated with the oncogenic potency of the tumor (malignant pheochromocytomas, adrenal cortical carcinomas).

Adrenal tumors are rare diseases that can be sporadic, or occur in rare congenital or familial syndromes. Yet, their study has the potential to reveal new molecular mechanisms of tumor growth, particularly in rare familial syndromes. Because they are rare, they cannot benefit from well-controlled therapeutic trials with new drugs.

To overcome these difficulties, the ESF-ENSAT's goal is to reinforce an already existing Network on adrenal tumors made of four national networks (COMETE, NISGAT, GANIMED, ACT, in France, Italy, Germany and UK). The ESF-ENSAT Network will enlarge its research scope dedicated to the study and treatment of adrenal tumors, and will enroll new teams from other European countries.

The main objective of the Programme is to expand and further develop a database for each of the 4 types of adrenal tumors that would contain information on tissue collection as well as clinical data and disease-oriented registries. The Programme also aims at supporting short visits and exchange visits and at organizing scientific meetings and Steering Committee meetings twice per year.
