Short Visit Grants & Exchange Grants - Final Call for Applications

The ESF Scientific Programme ”The Role of Soils in the Terrestrial Carbon Balance (RSTCB)” is offering a number of Short Visit and Exchange Grants  for collaborative projects related to one of the following themes:

  • Increasing confidence in carbon flux and stock change estimates (measurements and models)
  • Increasing process understanding
  • Heterogeneity and scaling
  • Effects of perturbation
  • Potential for mitigation

Criteria for Eligibility

RSTCB Exchange Grants are intended to initiate or strengthen links between different research groups.  Grants do not provide full salaries, and will not be awarded to fund work of an applicant at an institute to which he or she is already affiliated.

a) Duration: Short Visit Grants up to 15 days, Exchange Grants up to 8 weeks.

b) RSTCB Grants are primarily intended for young scientists (PhD students or postdocs).

c) Candidates must currently be affiliated to a European institution (university etc.) in an ESF member country.  We also consider applications from candidates from other European countries.

d) At least one of the institutes involved must be located in a country supporting the programme (Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom).  Priority will be given to applications where both the institute of origin and the host institute are located in countries supporting the programme.

e) All collaborative projects related to one or more of the RSTCB themes listed above will be taken into consideration.

Application Procedure

Applications should be submitted using the online application form:

Short Visit Grants: 

Short Visit Grant applications must include the following sections:

1) A short description of the proposed project work (about 250 words) and the aim of the visit

2) A curriculum vitae of two A4 pages

Exchange Grants: 

Exchange Grant applications must include the following sections:

1) A short description of the proposed project work (about 1000 words) and the aim of the visit

2) A curriculum vitae of two A4 pages

3) Five most recent publications

4) A letter of recommendation from someone familiar with the applicant’s work

5) A letter of acceptance from the host at the receiving institute

Allowance

Short Visit Grants are reimbursed on a per diem basis of 85 EUR plus actual travel expenses up to a maximum of 500 EUR. 

Exchange Grants are reimbursed on the basis of an allowance of 400 EUR per weeek plus actual travel expenses up to a maximum of 500 EUR.  Travel will be refunded on the basis of actual costs and on the basis of APEX type airfares or 2nd class train travel for shorter distances. The grants do not cover health insurance, taxes, or retirement scheme contributions.

For Short Visits full payment of the grant will be made after the visit, subject to receipt of the scientific report, original travel tickets and signed host statement form(s), one month after the visit. 

For Exchange Grant visits 80% of the subsistence allowance will be payable two months in advance.  The final payment, including the reimbursement of travel costs, will be made after the exchange visit, subject to receipt of the scientific report, original travel tickets and signed host statement form(s), one month after the visit.
