Nonlinear Chemistry in Complex Reactors: Models and Experiments (REACTOR)

REACTOR Grants for Visits

The REACTOR Programme was launched in January 2000 and will run for a period of five years. The aim of the programme is the "development of fundamental understanding at the molecular level of the processes leading to the formation of spatiotemporal structure in chemical and biological systems".

The Programme will operate through three linked themes:

  • spatiotemporal pattern formation and control in novel open reactors;
  • nonlinear kinetics of complex chemical and biochemical processes;
  • nonlinear processes at interfaces in heterogeneous catalysis and
  • electrochemistry.

The REACTOR Steering Committee announces a Grants For Visits scheme associated with the REACTOR Programme.  Grants are intended to stimulate co-operation between different research groups in different European countries through the exchange of individuals.

Criteria

Applicants should:

  • undertake work applicable to the Programme;
  • apply for a visit/stay in a laboratory in a European country other than their country of origin;
  • return to their institution of origin upon termination of the visit so that their institution may also benefit from the applicant’s broadened knowledge.

At least one of the host and/or sending institutions should be from a country where the research funding agencies contribute to the REACTOR Programme (Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal and the United Kingdom).

The Steering Committee welcomes applications for support associated with any of the above areas of the Programme. Applications will be judged on scientific merit and on their contribution to the overall aims of the Programme.

Duration

The Steering Committee proposes to support two types of visit:

  • short visits (more appropriate to senior researchers) which are expected to be of up to 7 days duration,   and
  • longer exchange visits (more appropriate to junior researchers such as graduate students or postdoctoral workers without a permanent position) which are expected to be of up to 1 month.

The Programme expects to offer a total of approximately 20 grants per annum shared between these two categories.

Levels of Support

Support will be provided towards travel, accommodation and subsistence subject to the following maxima:

  • for short visits, a maximum grant of 1000 Euro
  • for longer exchange visits, a maximum of 1600 Euro

For short visits, reimbursement will be made after the visit subject to receipt of the final report (see below).

For longer exchange visits, a payment of 75 per cent of the total award will be made in advance of the visit, where possible, with the balance on receipt of the final report.

Reimbursement is made against actual costs for travel and accommodation, so the original tickets and receipts will be required at the end of the visit.

Application Procedure

Applicants for either type of visit should submit the following:

  • name, address, telephone, fax and email of applicant;
  • name, address, telephone, fax and email of host at receiving institute;
  • estimated costs of visit, broken down under subheadings for travel, accommodation and subsistence;
  • where appropriate, an indication of additional funding for support of the visit from other sources;
  • a statement of the sum requested from the REACTOR Programme;
  • the proposed dates of the visit;
  • a description of the proposed project work and the aim of the visit (justifying its length) . For short visits, only a brief indication of the purpose is required, for longer exchanges the project description should not exceed 1 page of A4 in at least 10 point type.

Applicants should indicate if they have had a previous grant under this Programme.

For longer exchange visits, applicants should additionally submit a brief C.V., a proposed title for the project, a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s supervisor or someone else familiar with the applicant’s work and a letter of acceptance from the host at the receiving institute.

Applications should be submitted by email (either as plain ASCII text or as attached documents in Word for Windows or compatible format) to the Chair of the Steering Committee, Professor Zoltan Noszticzius Email

with paper copies, including originals of the letters of recommendation and acceptance, then posted to the ESF Administrator for Programme REACTOR, Ms. Pat Cosgrove, European Science Foundation, PEN (formerly PESC), 1 quai Lezay-Marnesia, 67080 Strasbourg cedex, France.

Deadlines for Application

Applications may be submitted at any time, but will be considered in terms of the following deadlines:

  • 31 March
  • 30 June
  • 30 September and
  • 31 December

in each of the years of the Programme (the December deadline will not operate in the final year).

Applications received by a given deadline will be assessed by a group comprising members of the Steering Committee under its Chairman.  Applicants will be informed of the outcome of these deliberations within one month of the deadline.

Final Visit Report

It is a condition of support from the REACTOR Programme that exchange visitors must agree to provide a 2 page report at the end of the visit. Publications arising from visits from this scheme should acknowledge the support from ESF Programme REACTOR. Following publication, the citation reference should be sent to the Chair of the Steering Committee and, where possible, a reprint sent to the ESF office for collation into the Programme Report.

Bench fees and salary costs are not paid under this scheme.

There are no age limits for this scheme.
