Background

The EMOT programme was launched in January 1993 for a four-year period (1993-96). The goal of the programme is to create an integrated set of activities which will help to co-ordinate research on management and organisations across Europe and to stimulate further cross-national research.

Over this period of four years, a series of workshops were organised on themes identified as central to the development of European Management and Organisations in Transition. Academics from across Europe were encouraged to become involved in the programme to create networks of collaborative research that can contribute to the development of a truly European wide understanding of the changing nature of organisations and management across the continent.

Two key research themes have been identified:

The comparative analysis of different forms of economic organisation in Europe and how these are changing; this theme focuses on the divergence of economic organisation across Europe and their interdependence with dominant social institutions.

The comparative study of inter-regional and international integration as firms respond to the challenges of internationalisation in East and West Europe.

The co-directors of the Programme are Professor Richard Whitley, Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, England and Professor Anna Grandori, Bocconi University, Milan, Italy. The research co-ordinator is Dr. Bryan Mundell, Bocconi University, Milan, Italy.

Oversight of the programme is taken by a Steering Committee of ten people nominated by each of the national research councils which have contributed to the Programme's budget.
