EC Roadmap “Metallurgy made in and for Europe” based on an ESF MatSEEC Science Position Paper
The European Commission recently published a Metallurgy Roadmap entitled “Metallurgy made in and for Europe - The Perspective of Producers and End-Users” considering the recommendations made by the ESF Materials Science and Engineering Expert Committee (MatSEEC) in its science position paper released in June 2012 and entitled “Metallurgy Europe – A Renaissance Programme for 2012-2022”.
This roadmap is the result of consultations between experts, rapporteurs and stakeholder representatives launched in October 2013 and is an obvious continuation of the actions and programmes funded by the EC in the field of metallurgy, together with the creation of the Metallurgy Europe programme which was launched in September 2014 and recommended by MatSEEC. The EC Metallurgy Roadmap provides a detailed agenda of the efforts needed over the next 10 to 20 years and beyond on R&D for new materials and improved material performance. Several application sectors have been considered, i.e. Transport, Construction, Consumer Goods, Electronic, Energy and Tooling sectors. These sectors cover almost the full range of metal use and represent a wide array of disparate demands on metallurgy. For each sector, the requirements to meet future application needs have been addressed. As a result, for individual metals, a range of desired properties and performance criteria have emerged.The roadmap is driven by the market requirements and it is an important tool for collaborative technology planning and coordination for metallurgical industries. It puts forward key metallurgy research needs and innovation activities to advance metallurgy-based technologies for the coming years. It helps to identify, select and develop technology alternatives to satisfy a set of final product characteristics but also it serves to give confidence to funding policy makers committing resources.
