Hotel Villa del Mare, Acquafredda di Maratea, Italy
The conference will be held at Hotel Villa del Mare in Acquafredda di Maratea. Acquafredda di Maratea is situated on the coast, on the Gulf of Policastro, between Sapri and Maratea, about 200 km (125 miles) south of Naples and about 400 km (250 miles) south of Rome. Group transportation will be organised on arrival and departure days from and back to Sapri train station.
Practical Information Guide PDF (1 MB) |
Systems Chemistry is the joint effort of prebiotic and supramolecular chemistry together with theoretical biology and complex systems research to address problems relating to the origin and synthesis of life. The emerging field can be viewed as the bottom up pendant of systems biology towards synthetic biology. A major focus is laid on the study of autocatalytic reaction systems, such as chemical self-replicating, self-reproducing, and chiral symmetry breaking systems. The field aims at the construction of dynamic supersystems embedding at least one autocatalytic subsystem. Subsystems may be classified as genetic, metabolic, or compartiment-building. Pairwise integration into higher organized supersystems is expected to yield the knowledge enabling later the triple integration into minimal chemical cells. Finding the chemical roots of Darwinian evolvability is seen as a key challenge for the field.
The conference will convene internationally leading experts from various relevant areas to elucidate where we stand in 2008. Facets from this intriguing and truly interdisciplinary endeavour come from fields as diverse as geochemistry and organocatalysis, biomolecular chemistry and liposome technology, metal-organic chemistry and the theory of networks and evolution. Joining these facets by the unifying principle of autocatalysis leads to a new view which may be especially attractive for the next generation of chemists. Time will be allotted to poster presentations.

There will be no short talks other than those listed on the final programme. All other abstracts are accepted for poster presentation unless the Conference Officer informs you otherwise.
Posters can be fixed with self-adhesive tape onto poster panels. Recommended poster size is 100 cm high x 100 cm wide. Use letters and drawings that can be read from approximately 100 cm distance.
Detailed information on all practical aspects of the conference (access to site, registration & fee payments, accommodation, travel reimbursements...) is available from the Practical Information Guide (above under Location Information). Please read it fully and carefully...
GROUP TRANSPORTATION
Bus departure times – Sunday 3 October: from 15.00 to 22.45
All major trains arriving in Sapri from Rome/ Naples will be met by bus to transfer you the 8 km to the Hotel. This transfer service will operate free of charge so you are encouraged to take advantage of it. The buses will have a sign in the window indicating “ESF-COST High-Level Research Conferences” for easy recognition.
Group transportation back to Sapri train station will be arranged in a similar way for the departure day.
Bus departure times – Wednesday 8 October: after breakfast
ACCOMMODATION
Please note that SINGLE accommodation can only be guaranteed to invited speakers. All other participants will have to share a TWIN room.
