Final Programme & List of Accepted Participants

This ESF-EMBO Conference aims to create a timely forum for multi-disciplinary discussions of recent developments in the ionising radiation effects on integrated living systems, from molecular to tissular scales, bringing together physicists, chemists, biochemists, biologists, genetics experts as well as physicians with a common interest in using different radiation sources and advanced techniques to explore transdisciplinary aspects of modern radiation biology and related biomedical applications. Deeply understanding the basic mechanisms of radiation damage in vitro and on living cells, starting from the early radical and molecular processes to mutagenic DNA lesions, cell signalling, genomic instability, apoptosis, microenvironment and Bystander effects, radio sensitivity should have in the near future many practical consequences like the customization of radiation therapy or radioprotection protocols.   In this context, spatio-temporal radiation biology represents a newly emerging interdisciplinary field of studies driven nowadays in strong synergy with the most recent progresses of molecular biology, genomics and proteomics, biomarker detections, X-ray synchrotron micro-imaging, microbeams, pulsed relativistic particle sources, selective targeting radiopharmaceutical, advanced radiation therapies.

This ESF-EMBO symposium will gather together actors from the academic, applied and medical domains as well as private companies and clinicians, to take advantage of the high research quality and technological environment developed in a European and international context. The programme will address a number of highly topical aspects of spatio-temporal radiation biology, evolving over several orders of magnitude, typically from femtosecond and sub-micrometric scales.

Scientific sessions will focus on:

  • Session 1 – Molecular and sub-cellular imaging of radiation effects Spatio-temporal organization of molecular damages – Real-time molecular organization Sub-cellular redistribution of molecular processes
  • Session 2 – Prethermal and thermal radiation processes Short-time course events and collective effects – Molecular dynamics of elementary processes - Spatial distribution of molecular damages in tracks
  • Session 3 – Induction, amplification of damages Spatial induction of molecular damages – Chromosomal aberrations and gene amplification – Radionuclides – Targeting radiopharmaceuticals – Modulation of radiosensitivity
  • Session 4 – Microbeam radiation Microbeam irradiation and unique cell – Microbeam dosimetry for radiation therapy
  • Session 5 – Microenvironment and radiation responses Nanodosimetry - Non targeted radiation effects and carcinogenesis – 2 and 3D Bystander response – Real-time nucleation
  • Session 6 – Cellular imaging for radiation biology X ray micro-imaging – Cellular organization and molecular repair – Chromatin remodeling
  • Session 7 – Innovation approaches for radiotherapies Development of hadrontherapy – Pulsed relativistic particle sources – Simulations for clinical treatments.

The conference will be organized around transdisciplinary advances communicated in invited oral presentations and selected short talks. The synergy between participating scientists will be encouraged during flash poster presentations, and poster sessions. A poster prize sponsored by EMBO will be awarded at the end of the conference. A forward look plenary discussion will be planned for identifying some innovating developments. Some grants will be available for invited speakers and young researchers.

GROUP TRANSPORTATION
Three buses will be arranged on arrival day from Barcelona airport to Sant Feliu. The journey takes approximately 2 hours, depending on traffic.

Bus departure times – Saturday 16 May: 16.30, 17.30 and 18.30

Airport departure point: the buses will wait in the Bus Parking area located just to the left of Terminal A on exit. Each bus has been requested to be at the meeting point 20-30 minutes before scheduled departure. The coaches will have a sign in the window indicating “ESF Research Conferences” for easy recognition.

Group transportation back to Barcelona airport will be arranged in a similar way for the departure day.

Bus departure time – Thursday 21 May: 08.30

ACCOMMODATION
Please note that SINGLE accommodation can only be guaranteed to invited speakers. All other participants will share a TWIN room. In case single rooms would become available at the time of the conference, rooms will be attributed on a “first come, first served” basis. Only the TWIN conference fee should be paid to the ESF when registering. The supplement for single should be paid to the venue directly. Should you wish to be put on the waiting list for single accommodation, please contact Ms. Jean Kelly.
