The conference will take place in Bellaterra, 20 minutes north of Barcelona. Group transportation will be arranged from/to Barcelona airport, on arrival and departure days and it will take 30 minutes drive.

Preliminary Programme & Applications

The purpose of the conference is to provide researchers working in harmonic analysis, quasiconformal mappings or geometric measure theory with a scientific event designed to promote a deep interaction between the three subjects.  
When the theory of quasiconformal mappings reached some maturity its strong relation to real analysis (in particular to Calderón-Zygmund theory, through its connection with the Beurling transform) became apparent.  In the past two decades one has realised that this relation is even more intimate than it was expected, through the work on area distortion, connection with PDEs etc. In particular, area distortion is related to the precise value of the norm of the Beurling transform as an operator on Lp, and this has lead to connections with probability theory (martingales) and control theory (the Bellman function). On the other hand, the mapping properties of Calderón-Zygmund operators of last generation, in which the underlying measure is a rather general measure on Euclidean space, has shown to be intimately connected to rectifiability (uniform rectifiability) and thus to geometric measure theory.  Recently a new connection between geometric measure theory and quasiconformal mappings has also emerged, when studying removability problems for quasiregular functions.
The main goal of the conference is to bring together the leading worldwide experts in each of the subjects listed above and young researchers, including postdocs and advanced doctoral students working in related topics. One expects that new perspectives will arise, new problems will be raised and new light will be shed on old open problems.

The themes dealt with in the conference will be:

1. New developments on distortion of sets under quasiconformal mappings (Lacey, Sawyer)
2. Quasiconformal mappings and PDE, in particular the Calderón inverse problem (Astala, Faraco, Iwaniec, Päivärinta, Zhong)
3. Removability and quasiconformal mappings (Astala, Clop, Mateu, Orobitg, Tolsa)
4. Functions of finite distortion and hyperelastic deformations (David, Iwaniec, Koskela, Saksman)
5. Metric measure spaces, Poincaré’s inequality and harmonic functions (Hajlasz, Koskela, Zhong)

Abstracts, Posters & Short Oral Contributions

Participants whose abstracts or posters have been accepted as short talks have been informed.

Poster size should be no more than 140 cm high x 100 cm wide. Use letters and drawings that can be read from approximately 100 cm distance.

What conference fee covers

Basic expenses comprise:

• registration and meeting costs;
• accommodation in twin room sharing with another participant;
  
• all lunches, coffee breaks and drinks included;
  
• participation at the excursion and two conference dinner;
  
• group transportation from/to the nearest airport.

* Please note: this fee is eligible for local participants selected by CRM. The list of the applicants will be communicated to CRM who will make the selection.

Cancellation:

Should you need to cancel your participation, please contact the Conference Officer immediately. If notice of cancellation is received more than two weeks before the conference, all but EUR 100 will be reimbursed. No refund is possible if notice of cancellation is received less than two weeks before the conference.

Group Transportation

Buses will be arranged on arrival and departure day between Barcelona airport  and the hotel. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes.
      
Airport departure point: Sunday 14 June 2009 at 15:30 and 18:00. A guide from the bus company will wait for you in front of the arrival door inside the airport with an ESF sign for easy recognition.
   
Group transportation back will be arranged in a similar way for the departure day: a bus to Barcelona Airport is schedule for June 20 at 9:00.

Do not forget to plan enough time for both journey and checking-in at the airport when booking your flight!
   
You are strongly urged to take advantage of this organised transportation, which is included in the conference fee.

• ESF Research Network Programme on 'Harmonic and Complex Analysis and its Applications' (HCAA): The main idea of this programme is to establish a fruitful cooperation between two scientific communities: analysts with a broad background in complex and harmonic analysis and mathematical physics, and specialists in physics and applied sciences.
  The programme, managed by ESF's Standing Committee for Physical and Engineering Sciences (PEN (formerly PESC)), is a European networking activity aimed at the promotion of scientific cooperation at the European and international levels; scientific mobility and integration of the national activities and groups with complementary backgrounds and expertise; and research training of younger scientists by doctoral scholarships and post-doctoral fellowships.
  Particular topics which will be considered by this programme include conformal and quasiconformal mappings, potential theory, Banach spaces of analytic functions and their applications to the problems of fluid mechanics, conformal field theory, Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics, and signal processing.
  This project includes scientific groups from Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.
  Programme activities include organisation and support of conferences, joint seminars and workshops, various visiting programs and fellowships for younger researchers.
  

• Sociedad Española de Matematica Aplicáda (SEMA)

• Ingenio MATHEMATICA (i-MATH) is a CONSOLIDER singular research project for the period 2006-2011.
