A successful Chairs’ Day ensures high organisational standard of ESF Research Conferences

Chairs and Conferences Unit

The Chairs and the Conferences Unit

Eighteen leading scientists selected to chair upcoming ESF Research Conferences attended a Chairs’ Day organised by the Conferences Unit to explore and discuss the different aspects of running their international conferences. Understanding the conference format and objectives, managing its budget, selecting speakers and participants and ensuring effective publicity all formed part of the working agenda. The informal, open atmosphere of the meeting meant information and ideas were freely exchanged to ensure that both the Chairs and the Conference staff made the most of this first-time encounter.

The agenda was designed to enhance the transparency of the Scheme and establish a dynamic working relationship with the Chairs. Interactive presentations by the Conference team and extended Q&A sessions gave the attending scientists the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the various elements of a research conference and find out what their role as a Chair involves.

The Scheme’s commitment to scientific synergy and interdisciplinary collaboration was also very perceptible during this working day, where Chairs’ expertise ranged from natural and earth sciences to humanities and social sciences.  Informal talks between scientists from different backgrounds usually turned to common research interests and in some cases new project plans and ideas for cooperation were initiated. Chairs expressed their satisfaction at getting to know the Conferences team and having their many queries answered and departed feeling confident that future communication would be effective in delivering the high scientific and organisational quality of the ESF Research conferences.

The Chairs’ Day was very successful in highlighting and putting into practice the potential and strive for excellence of the ESF Research Conferences Scheme. This meant both Chairs and staff were equally keen to make this initiative a recurring annual event.
