ESF and ICTP explore the newest breakthroughs in Geometry and Dynamics
The European Science Foundation (ESF) and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) have joined forces to support, manage and co-sponsor a series of high-level conferences on Geometry and Dynamics.
Founded in 1964 by the Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, ICTP is the one of the leading global scientific institutions for fundamental research and development. It fosters research groups in physical sciences and mathematics and creates scientific programmes in support of developing countries.
ESF has been promoting collaboration among European researchers and organising international conferences for more than 30 years, covering an extraordinary plurality of disciplines: from natural, medical and engineering sciences to social sciences and humanities.
Thanks to this new partnership, ESF-ICTP conferences will provide scientists and young researchers from all over the world with the opportunity to meet and discuss about emerging and strategically relevant topics in Geometry and Dynamics. Participants coming from ESF member countries or non developing countries will be funded by ESF, while attendees coming from developing countries will be funded by ICTP.
The series of ESF-ICTP conferences will consist of two conferences per year during the period 2012-2014 and will be located in Trieste at the ICTP facilities. This will allow the conference teams to ensure excellent services, value for money and the same treatment and conditions for all speakers and grantees.
The first conference will be held from 4 to 8 June 2012 and will focus on Dynamical Systems. In particular, the following topics will be discussed: chaotic dynamics, conservative dynamics, ergodic theory, one-dimensional dynamics, and geometric, algebraic and topological aspects of dynamics. The organising committee is composed of Stefano Luzzatto, research scientist at ICTP, Marcelo Viana, Professor of Mathematics at the Instituto de Matematica Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) in Rio de Janeiro and Jean-Christophe Yoccoz, Professor of Mathematics at the Collège de France. The invited speakers includes some of the leading scientists of dynamics as well as young researchers.
The second conference on “Geometric Analysis” will take place from 25 to 29 June 2012. Its main goal is to enhance interaction among the best experts in the field (especially in areas such as complex geometry, geometric flows and geometric problems in general relativity) and to introduce and discuss forefront research with young participants from all over the world. The organising committee is comprised of Claudio Arezzo, research scientist at ICTP, Frank Pacard, Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique, Richard Schoen, Professor of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University, and G. Tian, Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University and Beijing University.
This partnership represents an opportunity to bring together mathematicians and other experts from all over the world and to facilitate the dissemination of scientific information to an exceptionally enlarged community.
