ESF, FMSH/Entre-Sciences’ conferences to address critical environmental topics

The European Science Foundation (ESF) and the French Foundation of the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH) (within the Entre-Sciences programme) have agreed to jointly develop a new conference series in environmental sciences; an effort to actively foster exchanges between scientists working in the humanities and social sciences and their colleagues in the life and natural sciences.

The ESF-FMSH Entre-Sciences series will address key issues such as global climate change, energy and environment, extreme events and global policy matters. These conferences will bring together leading scientists and early-stage researchers of different expertise and background to facilitate cross-field collaborations and outline new research paths to dealing with urgent environmental challenges.

“Through the partnership with the ESF, the FMSH is very pleased to add a European dimension to our new Entre-Sciences programme, essentially aimed at promoting integrative approaches in science by facilitating a fruitful dialogue between social and natural sciences. The environmental crisis – focus of these conferences, is a complex issue with impacts at various levels, the societal and economic in particular,” said Dr. Alain d’Iribarne, General Director of the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH) in Paris.

“The conference series is perfectly in line with a major concern of the FMSH - sustainable development, a scientific goal we established in the seventies and now pursue through the recent creation of the International Social Economy Observatory,” Dr. Iribarne added.

ESF-FMSH Entre-Sciences Conference on ‘New Methodologies and Interdisciplinary Approaches in Global Change Research’

The first conference of the series, ‘New Methodologies and Interdisciplinary Approaches in Global Change Research’, has been selected as an official event of the EC French Presidency in 2008/2009. It will take place 5-10 November 2008 on the Island of Porquerolles, off the Giens peninsula on the French Riviera.

The conference, co-chaired by climatologist Dr. Joël Guiot (CEREGE/ECCOREV, France) and economist Dr. Sylvie Thoron (GREQAM/EHESS, France), will gather experts from all disciplines to discuss the latest advances in modelling global change. Invited speakers and attendees from three continents, Europe, America and Asia, will ensure not only an interdisciplinary, but also a global perspective. The conference will encourage an informal exchange of ideas across disciplines, and collaborative follow up projects.

“During the last years, climate and impact models made considerable advances to our understanding (and prediction) of the changes that we are currently living. This is the outcome of multiple collaborations between data and model researchers. Such interdisciplinarity is a great chance for global change science,” Dr Guiot explains.

Call for proposals for 2010 ESF-FMSH Entre-Sciences Conference on Energy and Environment

Scientists are invited to submit proposals for a subsequent ESF-FMSH Entre Sciences Conference, focusing on ‘Energy and Environment’. The closing date for submissions is 15th September 2008. Scientists with successful proposals will be asked to collaborate closely with ESF and Entre-Sciences to ensure a highly interdisciplinary programme.
