The Steering Committee of this activity, chaired by Professor Ruth Duncan, has met three times in July 2003, October 2003 and May 2004.
5 small workshops were held on 1-5 March 2004, addressing the following subtopics in Nanomedicine:
(1) Analytical Techniques and Diagnostic Tools,
(2) Nanoimaging and Manipulation,
(3) Nanomaterials and Nanodevices,
(4) Drug Delivery and Pharmaceutical Development and
(5) Clinical Applications and Toxicology
The final conference took place on 8 -10 November 2004 at Le Bischenberg near Strasbourg . The goal of this conference was to provide a platform for exchanging views between researchers and policy makers. Approximately 80 participants from academia, industry, ESF Member Organisations and scientific press have attended.
The ESF Forward Look on Nanomedicine will review the state-of-the-art in Nanomedicine, foresee future trends in the next decade, stimulate cooperation between the medical community and chemists, physicists, biologists, and engineers, and encourage interaction between scientific communities and the policy makers from ESF Member Organisations and the general public. It is envisaged that this ESF foresight exercise will produce a major report for future research directions in the field. The preliminary version of the report is expected to be completed in early 2005.

An ESF Nanomedicine Forward Look workshop has taken place on 5 September 2005 at EuroNanoForum2005, Edinburgh (UK).
Workshop Programme
As a conclusion of this two-year study, a Report has been published by the ESF entitled “Scientific Forward Look on Nanomedicine”, which was unveiled at a Press Briefing in Brussels on 15 December 2005. To download a pdf version of the Final Report click here
Ten speakers took part in the briefing, including Professor Ruth Duncan of the University of Cardiff, UK, who had a leading role in the forward look. The briefing reviewed the ESF’s role in promoting nanomedical research, and what Europe needs to do to stay at the forefront of this field. To read a summary of the Press Briefing click here.
