Musical Life in Europe 1600-1900

Team 5: National Representations of Music: conservatories and musical discourse

6-7 November 1998, Strasbourg, France.
CONSERVATORIES IN PERSPECTIVE

The purpose of this meeting is twofold : conceiving the organization of the published products, i. e. one or two volumes on the conservatories (problems of periodization, thematic emphasis, and unity of outlook) ; starting our investigations concerning the beginnings and evolution of the concept of conservatory, from the Italian model to the multiplication of such institutions in the 19th century. We hope to achieve an overall organization which can strike a satisfactory balance between countries and between themes of research, while avoiding both loose ends and blank areas.

Prospective participants

  • The 'core group' of the 1996 Mainz meeting : Jean-Jacques Eigeldinger (Geneva), Michael Fend (London), Yves Gerard (Paris) and Michel Noiray (Paris).
  • New contributors showing expertise in various periods and European institutions : Helen Geyer (Weimar, on the Venice and Naples conservatories), Jan Ling (Göteborg, on the Stockholm conservatory), Emmanuel Hondre, (Paris, Henri Vanhulst (Brussels), Janos Karpati (Budapest).

Call for papers

Prospective participants are welcome to declare an interest in the research scheme. All aspects of the topic will be considered, as long as two main criteria are

  • any aspect under scrutiny, whether administrative, aesthetic or ideological, must be placed in an international perspective ;
  • archival studies of institutions are welcome and indeed indispensable, as long as they take national and international implications into consideration.

Organiser

The workshop was organised by Dr. Michel Noiray (Paris).
