Airborne Polar Experiment (APE)

Summary

This programme concerns the coordination of an airborne experiment which will make use of strasopheric platforms for in situ measurements of the minor atmospheric components which are responsible for the greenhouse effect. The main objectives of the Airborne Polar Experiment are to study:

  • the production and loss of the ozone in the middle latitude and in the Arctic and Antarctic polar regions;
  • the role of polar vortex and the polar vortex instabilities on the ozone distribution;
  • the role of the polar stratospheric clouds on the ozone depletion;
  • the role of the natural aerosols on the mechanisms of the ozone depletion.
