Conduction electrons in metals are usually described within the framework of Fermi-liquid theory. Recently, striking departures from Fermi-liquid behaviour have been found in a number of metals with strong electronic correlations, and several alternative microscopic explanations are possible. The ESF programme aimed at making a definite assignment of the Fermi-liquid instability in a given system to a particular scenario and shedding light on the type of excitations that are responsible for the unusual behaviour by comparing macroscopic as well as microscopic experiments with theoretical models.
Five years, from 1998 to 2002.
The programme’s scientific activities ended in June 2003.
