Searching for a biofilm formula

What do 'newly emerging' teeth of small children and a stone in a riverbed have in common? Within a very short time countless bacteria and micro-organisms are to be found on their surfaces. They constitute a so-called biofilm. Tom Battin from the department of limnology und hydro botany at the faculty of life sciences and the WasserKluster Lunz Inc. has devoted his research to this topic. Currently he deals with the question how the biodiversity of biofilms and ecosystem functions are connected. He does so in the scope of an international project. The goal is to find a universal 'key' which is at the core and explains the functioning of all biofilms. Read the full article here (note: full article in German).
