ESF, VR, FORMAS sign MOU to promote Global Environmental Change Research

The European Science Foundation (ESF), the Swedish Research Council (VR), and the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (FORMAS) have agreed to join forces to promote Global Change Research through an international, interdisciplinary conference series. The three partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement on 10 October 2007.

These biannual conferences will allow young researchers to discuss topics at the frontier of scientific research with the leading experts in the field. They will provide a forum for establishing new contacts and facilitate the development of collaborative networks throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
The unique format of these ESF-VR-FORMAS Conferences on Global Change Research combines talks by high-ranking speakers with an informal exchange of ideas. Scientists meet for four full days in and out of the lecture hall to debate the latest developments in their field and to establish new collaborations thus creating scientific synergy.

ESF-VR-FORMAS Conference 2007: Focussing on the Arctic Region
On 13-17 October, the first ESF-VR-FORMAS Conferences on Global Change Research is taking place in Nynäshamn, Sweden. This year, focus will be set on the ‘Role of the Arctic Region’. The conference aims to contribute to Arctic research in the International Polar Year 2007. The sessions include scenarios for future climate change, impacts on life, examples of ad-aptation, and what can be learned about past climates and the rate of change from studying ice cores. This four day long international conference will also highlight the chances of developing models for prediction of the future, necessary for decision making.
