The conference will take place at the Kallvik Conference Centre (Kokouskeskus Kallvik), 17 km East of Helsinki. The centre is situated located in a wooded park, directly on the Gulf of Finland.

The objective of the conference is to bring together a selection of top-notch scientists covering the convergent and complementary contributions from traditionally separate fields of chemistry: organic, inorganic and organometallic chemistry, as well as theoretical chemistry, crystallography and materials science. Modern crystal engineering has sprung from early interests in diverse research fields such as topochemical reactions of crystalline organic species, interest in new materials, the packing of organic molecules in crystals and the effort to understand the popularity of space groups.

The synergistic relationship between theory, design and synthetic methods of supramolecular chemistry and those exploited to build crystalline aggregates will be discussed. In both cases the collective properties of the aggregate depend on the choice of intermolecular and interion interactions between components. By means of crystal engineering strategies materials for applications in optoelectronics, conductivity, superconductivity, magnetism as well as in catalysis, molecular sieves, solid state reactivity, and mechanics are being sought.

Crystal engineering strategies for the bottom-up construction of molecular materials do not differ, in the essence, from classical chemical experiments in which molecules are imagined, synthetic routes devised, products characterised and their properties measured. The step forward arises from the idea of being able to devise and/or control collective crystal properties by embedding into the molecular building blocks specific recognition and binding sites (building block functionalisation) that may lead to the target supramolecular aggregation. The stability and cohesion, phase transitional behaviour and other more utilitarian properties, such as those listed above, will depend on the number, strength, and reproducibility of the intermolecular interactions at work between components. The development of new chemical sensors is, for instance, of great interest for practical applications, since they can provide solutions in many fields of great economical and social impact, such as medical diagnostics, environmental sciences and cell biology.

  • On Friday 17 June, participants are kindly requested to make their own way to the conference centre.

  • Bus transportation back to Helsinki-Vantaa airport will be arranged for Wednesday 22 June departing after lunch. Departure times will be finalised on the spot by the conference secretary, in order to suit the majority.

Conference fees include full local costs, a half-day excusion and, for conferees, a registration fee of EUR 250.
Guest fees do not include use of conference facilities and equipment (i.e. internet...) nor are guests entitled to attend sessions.
