Modes of Variability in the Climate System: Past-Present-Future

27 May - 1 June 2012

This conference is organised with support from:

  • EPICA Descartes Prize
The European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) drilled two deep ice cores in Antarctica: the Dome C  ice core covers 800,000 years of climate history and represents the longest ice core time series from worldwide. The Dronning Maud Land ice core provides for the first high resolution information from the Atlantic sector of Antarctica over the entire last glacial cycle and represents a perfect counterpart to the Greenland ice core records.   EPICA is a joint European Science Foundation/European Commission scientific programme, funded by the EU and by national contributions from Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. The main logistic support was provided by IPEV and PNRA (at Dome C) and AWI (at Dronning Maud Land). EPICA received the EU Descartes Prize for Transnational Collaborative Research in 2007.
  • Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research (OCCR)
The OCCR is the centre of excellence for climate research of the University of Bern. It focuses on interdisciplinary research in the fields of natural, human and social sciences as well as economics and law.
  • INTERDYNAMIK
The DFG focus Program Integrated analysis of interglacial climate dynamics aims at a better understanding of climate dynamics using quantitative paleoclimate analyses in view of creating more reliable scenarios for future climate change.
  • PAGES (Past Global Changes)
The PAGES (Past Global Changes) is a core project of IGBP and is funded by the U.S. and Swiss National Science Foundations and NOAA. It supports research aimed at understanding the Earth’s past environment in order to make predictions for the future.
