The original programme proposal was launched in June 1998.
Research is being carried out by four teams.
In the summer of 2007,Cambridge University Press published the results of the programme in a four volume series, examining the domains of religion, the city, communication and information, seeking to uncover the deep but hidden unities shaping a common European past. The series is edited by Professor Robert Muchembled (Université de Paris XIII) and associate editor William Monter (Northwestern University, Illinois).
