Abstract

Because of accelerating globalisation, Europe is currently exposed to infectious diseases that emerge in any area of the planet as recently illustrated by the SRAS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and Asian influenza epidemics. The ESF has established a task force to evaluate the situation and make proposals for research on infectious diseases. The present report summarises their main conclusions and recommendations in three major aspects:

1. unpredictability of infectious diseases and their global risk and impact, thereby highlighting the most important challenges that should be tackled in Europe;

2. identification of the gaps in disciplines and scientific approaches, as well as the relevant trends in science and technology,

3. need for a scheme that helps efficient mobilisation of human resources, particularly with regard to the training and exchange of young scientists.
