Complex Systems and Changes: Water and Life

A “Frontiers of Science” event

29-31 October 2008 in Taormina, Sicily, Italy

Life on Earth is based, in its most simple form, on a few key chemical components, and the main one is Water. Water plays a pivotal role in many complex systems studied in the natural sciences. But at the present time, water is also a threatened resource that will pose socio-economic and strategic challenges in the near future. This joint ESF-COST event was dedicated to the link between water and life in all its diversity and complexity.

The following topics were covered:

  • origin of life
  • water & life in extreme environments
  • changes in the anthropocene
  • future challenges

In order to address these important topics, the first conference of this cycle entitled “Complex Systems and Changes: Water and Life” – a “Frontiers of Science” event was held on 29 - 31 October 2008 in Taormina, Sicily. By bringing scientists from different disciplines together for discussion on the most recent developments and remaining challenges, it was envisaged that this joint ESF- COST event would act as a discussion forum and as a catalyst for initiating new lines of research and synergistic contacts throughout Europe and beyond.

The conference provided a stimulating environment to trigger ideas for new lines of research or scientific collaboration throughout Europe and the world. It was further envisaged that discussions on key challenges for the future would lead to strategic activities (e.g., Science Policy Briefings).
