Citizenship, Involvement, Democracy (CID)

Summary

Contemporary democracies such as those of the European Union have been suffering increasingly from declining involvement by their citizens in the political process, and a general weakening of the bonds that hold society together.
This network will focus on the relationships between social and political forms of civic engagement and citizenship in contemporary democracies. Current debates about communitarianism, social capital, civil society, trust and the crises of the welfare state provide the general intellectual background, while empirically the network will integrate the results from national studies into a common comparative framework. more
