International market integration, also known as globalization of labour, capital and commodity markets, is the result of a long historical process. History has not experienced an uninterrupted evolution towards the global economy, however, for reasons that are the very subject of the research programme proposed in this application. This research programme will focus on the role of information technology on the adjustment of local markets to global market forces, the evolution of market institutions and its effects on market performance and market efficiency, the welfare consequences of market integration, the distribution of gains and losses within and among nations in the globalization process, and finally the politics of globalization.
