The goal of this network is to develop theories of gender and democracy using the results of carefully constructed European case studies built on common methods. Designed to be comparable, the studies will be analysed cross nationally. In each country investigators will examine the impact of women’s policy machinery on debates about 6 issues areas selected for their capacity to illustrate dimensions of gendered political roles. The network will (1) link teams of country researchers enabling them to provide cross national comparative analysis of the impact of woman on and the significance of gender to policy making in European democratic states, (2) ensure that the analysis is at the same time comparable to similar research in the United States, (3) add a European dimension to the understanding of women’s policy making roles and (4) add a European representation of women to democratic politics.
