Research Network on Gender, Politics and the State (RNGS-Europe)

Summary

The primary goal of the RNGS-Europe is to develop theories of gender and democracy through research that is cross-national, longitudinal, and cross-sectional. In order to examine both substantive and descriptive representation of women in politics, the research explores changes in the policy making process brought about by women’s policy machinery since the 1960s.  Using a comparative design, investigators in each country examine the impact of this policy machinery on the policy making process in 5 issue areas: abortion; job training; prostitution/traffic in women; democratic representation; and a “hot” topic of national interest.  The comparability of these national issue area studies depends on a rigorous attention to comparative methods, especially in the selection of policy debates, analysis of impact of agencies on policy process and content, and operational definitions of independent and dependent variables.
