More about the Network

The Network has its origin in two international meetings, one arranged in 1992-93 by the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the other in 1994 organised by the Institute of International and European Politics (URA-CNRS) of the University of Paris-X Nanterre.

At these meetings it became clear that it is necessary to break away from traditional research that isolates the analysis of communist systems, and now post-communist systems in central and eastern Europe, from mainstream social sciences. This is important because the transformations currently underway are not limited to simple political breakthroughs; they also tend to have great impact on all social sectors of the societies involved. Furthermore, the link between these changes and the social history that has helped determine them within the countries, has so far been poorly defined.

This Network consists mainly of five workshops, each of which is attempting to isolate and focus on certain aspects of the transitions that are common to all the countries involved. The Network is composed of a core of permanent members with additional outside participants joining each workshop, bringing specific expertise in the chosen area of study.
