Background

In the beginning of 2004, a group of eminent European scholars from a multitude of scientific disciplines – led by Dr. Piers Vitebsky from the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Campbridge - submitted the EUROCORES suggestion “Histories from the North: Environments, movements, narratives” to the ESF Standing Committee for the Humanities.

This text was the basis for the development of the “Call for Outline Proposals” and for further discussions at the pre-Management Committee, consisting of representatives from participating Funding Agencies. The Call for Outline Proposals was launched in May 2005.

By the deadline in the end of June 2005, 28 Outline Proposals were received. 14 proposers were invited by the International BOREAS Review Panel to send Full Proposals by January 2006. After careful consideration of the assessments given by the referees and the applicants’ comments, the Review Panel decided to recommend eight proposals for funding. Seven of them are now funded and running within the BOREAS programme.
