Project Leader Herbert Lindner

Profile

Herbert Lindner is the Project Leader of the Collaborative Research Project 'The role of linker histone variants and their phosphorylation in chromatin structure and function’.

1.  Do you think cell biology research is getting the attention and respect that it deserves in Europe? Why or why not? If not, what needs to be done?

No – Probably because it is too much basic research with few industrial applications. This does not fit very well with the FP’s.

2.  What do you think are the main difficulties to overcome in this field? (What can be done on a European level to address the difficulties and move this field forwards?)

Increase the support for basic research! The ESF EUROCORES is a good example, but it should not rely on the support from individual countries/research councils, why not integrate ESF into the ERC part of FP7 and increase the funding for collaborative basic research substantially?

3.  What, in your opinion, is the added value of the EuroDYNA Programme to cell biology research in general and to you and your CRP members specifically? How do you think EuroDYNA differs from other collaborative projects?

The support for collaboration between small research groups with focussed common scientific interests may definitively enhance the scientific impact of such area of research.

4.  As an expert in your field, what do you think is the potential impact of the EuroDYNA Programme and its projects?

Chromatin research is of increased importance, not the least because of its relation to epigenetics, but a three year project period is too short.

5.  How do you see the future of scientific collaboration?

For small research groups it is a necessity!

6.  Any motto you could share with us on how you do your job? What are your passions in life? What ambition would you still like to fulfill?

“Of course to find out how H1 phosphorylation is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation!!!”
