The EUROCORES programme “The Origin of Man, Language and Languages (OMLL)” is proud to announce its Final Conference on 12-14 December 2007 in Rome, Italy.
Background and Objective
The ESF European Collaborative Research (EUROCORES) Programmes offer researchers from Europe and beyond an opportunity to collaborate on basic research questions that are best addressed on a pan-European scale. The first EUROCORES programme that has been launched is “The Origin of Man, Language and Languages (OMLL)”, focussing on the question of the co-evolution of modern humans and language.
Within the OMLL programme, this question had been approached since early 2003 by 21 collaborative research projects of experts from fields such as archaeology, (paleo-) anthropology, artificial intelligence, ethology, genetics, linguistics and neuroscience. The OMLL Final Conference brings these projects together, offering an overview of what has been achieved by the collaborative efforts in this pioneering programme. Moreover, the conference will also provide an opportunity to discuss the future challenges for this multidisciplinary research field and to sow the seeds for follow-up activities, hereby making the focus of the OMLL Final Conference both on the past and on the future.
Structure of the programme
The OMLL Final Conference is scheduled around six thematic sessions, corresponding to the six themes addressed by the original OMLL Call for Proposals:
1. Language and Archaeology
2. Language and Brain
3. Language and Genes
4. Language Acquisition and Language Universals
5. Gesture, communication and language in Human and Nonhuman primates
6. Language Evolution and Computer Modeling
